When I started setting up my business in Kerala, Soul of Work, our coworking space in Kakkanad, the whole idea of tax compliance felt like a massive administrative chore. I quickly learned that getting Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration wasn't just checking a box on a legal list. It was absolutely essential for building credibility and unlocking benefits like the Input Tax Credit (ITC). If you're currently planning to launch or expand your business here, making sure you comply with these legal requirements is the most critical first step for smooth operations. Based on my experience, I've put together a straightforward, step-by-step guide on the documents you'll need to successfully register for GST in Kerala.

Basic Documents for GST Registration

The GST portal will need a core set of documents regardless of the legal structure of your company. Your application will be much faster if you have these prepared in the appropriate format.

  • Permanent Account Number (PAN): This is mandatory. The PAN card of the entity (the individual owner, the company, or the LLP) must be submitted.
  • Identity and Photograph: You will need the Aadhaar Card and a recent passport-sized color photograph of the Proprietor, all Partners, or all Directors, as well as the Authorized Signatory.
  • Proof of Business Address: This is a crucial section, as it establishes your official place of business in Kerala.
  • If the property is owned: Ownership deed is required.
  • If the property is rented/leased: You must provide a valid Rent/Lease Agreement along with one of the ownership proofs (like the Electricity Bill or Property Tax Receipt) of the owner.
  • If the property is shared or under consent: A No-Objection Certificate (NOC) or Consent Letter from the owner, along with their ownership proof and identity proof, is required.

Bank Account Details: To complete the registration, you must provide bank account details, which are confirmed through a scanned copy of a Cancelled Cheque clearly showing the business name, account number, IFSC code, and branch details.

Additional Documents for Different Types of Business Entities
