Hi, Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with small business owners and startup founders across Kerala through my work at Soul of Work, our co-working space and virtual office in Kakkanad, Kochi. One small but powerful change I made in my own business was shifting from a personal mobile number to a proper corporate SIM and business phone system.
Importance of having a corporate number
In the early days, I used my personal mobile number for everything related to Soul of Work. It was convenient, but it never really felt like a company number – it felt like my private phone that happened to be doing double duty for business. Once we moved to a corporate SIM in the company’s name, our communication immediately looked and felt more professional, and clients began seeing us as a structured organisation rather than just an individual they knew personally.
As our team and operations expanded inside the co-working space, managing multiple personal SIMs became a headache. Everyone had their own prepaid or postpaid plan, different recharge dates, and different data limits. There was no single place where I could see who was spending what or whether we were overshooting our mobile budgets. With a corporate mobile connection, all official numbers sit under one account, plans are standardised, and we receive a single consolidated bill that is far easier to track, approve, and account for.
Another key benefit was shifting responsibility from my personal wallet to the company’s books. Earlier, I would pay from my own card or UPI and later justify those transactions as “business expenses.” It was messy and blurred the line between me and the company. Now, all bills are raised in the company’s name, and mobile usage is clearly recorded as an organisational expense, which keeps both accounting and compliance cleaner.
Corporate numbers also give me control when people join or leave. If an employee uses their personal number and then exits, they walk away with the number, the contacts, and often the relationship history with clients. With corporate SIMs, the numbers belong to the company. When someone leaves, I simply reassign that SIM to another team member and maintain continuity with our customers and partners.
Finally, corporate mobile connections scale just like a co-working space does. You can start with 1–2 SIMs and keep adding more as your team grows, without redoing the entire process every time. For a growing startup or service business in Kerala, this flexibility is extremely useful.
How to apply with BSNL in Ernakulam
When I decided to formalise our phone system for Soul of Work, I chose BSNL for our corporate SIMs because of its strong presence and reliable network across Kerala. One important thing I learned is that not all BSNL outlets handle corporate mobile applications. In Ernakulam, you need to visit the BSNL office at Palarivattom, which functions as a main customer service centre and is equipped to process business and corporate requests.
Before visiting, I prepared a proper document file so I wouldn’t have to make multiple trips. BSNL follows standard business KYC rules, and they verify both the company details and the authorised person submitting the application. At the Palarivattom office, I informed the staff that I wanted corporate mobile connections in my company’s name, collected the necessary forms, signed where required, and submitted the documents from my file. Because everything was organised, the process was smooth and reasonably quick.
Documents required for applying for a corporate SIM
Here are the documents I recommend carrying when you apply for a BSNL corporate SIM for your startup or company in Kerala:
Request letter (printed on company letterhead)
Download Sample Request Letter (PDF) - SIM Request Letter & SIM Application Authorisatin Letter.pdf
A formal letter on your company’s letterhead stating that you wish to take BSNL mobile connections in the company’s name. Mention your company name, address, nature of business, and how many SIMs you need initially.
Authorisation letter (printed on company letterhead)
A letter authorising a specific person (often the owner, director, or manager) to submit the application and sign all forms on behalf of the company. Include the authorised person’s name, designation, and ID details such as Aadhaar number so BSNL can link that person to the company correctly.
Company registration certificate (Incorporation certificate)
A copy of your company’s incorporation or registration certificate to prove that the business is legally registered. This is a primary document for business KYC with any telecom provider.
GST certificate
If your company is GST-registered, carry a copy of your GST registration certificate showing your GSTIN, legal name, and registered address. This helps align billing and taxation properly and makes accounting easier.
PAN card of the company
A photocopy of the company PAN card so BSNL can link the connection and all future bills to the company’s PAN rather than your personal PAN.
Address proof of the company
Valid address proof for your business location, such as a recent utility bill (electricity, water), property tax receipt, or municipal/panchayat registration document in the company’s name. If you are using a co-working or virtual office address, use the official address proof documents provided for that address.
Aadhaar copy of the applicant (authorised signatory)
A self-attested copy of the authorised person’s Aadhaar card (or other accepted ID) for personal KYC. It’s a good idea to also carry a passport-size photograph, as some forms still require a photo to be affixed and signed.
I usually arrange these documents in order in a simple file before going: request letter, authorisation letter, incorporation certificate, GST certificate, PAN, address proof, and Aadhaar. That one small step makes a big difference at the counter and turns what could be a frustrating chore into a clean, professional process.

Conclusion
If you’re a founder in Kerala still managing your startup from a personal number, my honest suggestion is to take this step sooner rather than later. A corporate SIM and a proper business phone number may look like a small change from the outside, but in day-to-day operations, they add a lot of clarity, control, and professionalism to the way you run your company.
